How do I notarize a color copy of a document?

How do I notarize a color copy of a passport, driver’s license or utility bill? Do I need to attach a separate Notary certificate, or can I notarize directly on the copy?S. Y., Texas

This notarization you are asking about is called a copy certification. You must complete and attach a copy certification certificate to the document. You can find the wording for this form here. You would fill it out, sign, stamp and staple it to the copy. Please be aware that the Texas Secretary of State has clarified that a Notary Public may not certify a copy of a passport or driver’s license. If you have questions about Notary copy certification rules for other states, please see the list in The National Notary Bulletin article “How to certify a copy of a document.”

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors
